Hello, my name is Pamela Pelletier and I am the Community Planner at UA Science: Tumamoc.
The purpose of this blog is to communicate directly with Tucson residents about our Citizen-Science and Community Outreach projects. We’ll also use this blog to provide interesting information about the current scientific research and activities at Tumamoc, as well as other conservation-related research.
In the midst of metropolitan Tucson lies a place that is both a natural refuge and a cultural landscape, it bears more than 2500 hundred years of desert history waiting to be read. Tumamoc Hill is a landscape that has been foraged and farmed, drawn upon and dwelled upon for thousands of years. For more than a century, it has also been the site of continuously-running scientific experiments that have run longer than those at any other sites in the deserts of the world.
The Carnegie Institution established the Desert Laboratory on Tumamoc Hill in 1903. Purchased in the 1950’s by the University Of Arizona Board Of Regents, the 860-acre ecological reservation is now both a US National Historical Landmark and a US Archaeological District.
Our vision for Tumamoc is to become the internationally recognized center for conservation, research, & education of desert ecology and its inhabitants in an urban environment. Tumamoc is the first desert site for collective, interdisciplinary inquiries termed long-term ecological reflection, involving natural and social scientists, humanities scholars and naturalist writers, as well as citizen scientists. We strive to enlighten and enrich the lives of students and visitors and inspire creative urban ecological restoration and historic preservation programs throughout our local communities and far beyond.
